Single Crochet Dishcloth
The most common first project for a reason. One stitch, flat rows, no shaping. This is a good pattern to make two or three times in a row before moving on, since repetition is what actually builds tension control.
- Skill level
- Absolute beginner
- Finished size
- About 8 inches square
- Time
- 1 to 2 hours
What you need
- Worsted weight cotton yarn (about 100 yards), cotton holds up better than acrylic for dishcloths
- 5mm (H-8) hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Abbreviations
- ch
- chain
- sc
- single crochet
- st(s)
- stitch(es)
Instructions
- Row 1Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn. (25 sc)
- Rows 2 to 26Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in each st across. Turn. (25 sc)
Finishing
Fasten off, leaving a 6 inch tail. Weave the tail through the yarn needle and weave it into the back of the work. Trim any extra.
Notes
- Count your stitches at the end of every row. If you have more or fewer than 25, you added or dropped a stitch somewhere in that row.
- Your dishcloth might come out slightly bigger or smaller than 8 inches depending on your tension, and that's fine for a first project. Consistency matters more than exact size here.
- If you're not sure what any of the abbreviations mean or how to read the row instructions, how to read a crochet pattern breaks it down in more detail.
