Basic Beanie Hat
The first project here that has to fit an actual person. It uses the same increase logic as the amigurumi ball, just scaled up and stopped before the decreases start.
- Skill level
- Beginner to advancing beginner (comfortable with increases in the round)
- Finished size
- Adult average, about 21 to 22 inch head circumference
- Time
- 3 to 4 hours
What you need
- Worsted weight yarn, about 150 to 200 yards
- 5.5mm (I-9) hook (slightly larger than standard, for a stretchier fabric that fits comfortably)
- Stitch marker
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations
- ch
- chain
- sc
- single crochet
- st(s)
- stitch(es)
- inc
- increase (2 sc in same st)
Instructions
- Round 1Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
- Round 2Inc in each st around. (12 sc)
- Round 3*Sc 1, inc 1* rep around. (18 sc)
- Round 4*Sc 2, inc 1* rep around. (24 sc)
- Round 5*Sc 3, inc 1* rep around. (30 sc)
- Round 6*Sc 4, inc 1* rep around. (36 sc)
- Round 7*Sc 5, inc 1* rep around. (42 sc)
- Round 8*Sc 6, inc 1* rep around. (48 sc) — this should measure roughly the same width as the head this hat is for. If it needs to be bigger, add one more increase round following the pattern (sc 7, inc 1) before moving on.
- Rounds 9 to 24 (or until desired height)Sc in each st around, no increases. (48 sc) Try the hat on periodically starting around round 16 to check the length.
Finishing
Fasten off, leaving a 6 inch tail. Weave in both the starting and ending tails.
Notes
- The increase rounds form the flat top of the hat, and the plain rounds after form the sides. If the top is cupping instead of lying flat, you increased too little for your gauge, add stitches evenly to the next hat you make. If it's rippling, you increased too much.
- This pattern doesn't include a folded brim. If you want one, work 2 to 3 extra plain rounds beyond your target length, since the brim fold will use up some of that length.
- Sizing runs by head circumference more than by row count, since everyone's gauge is slightly different. Measure the hat around row 20 by stretching it slightly and comparing to the head it's for.
What to make next
This uses the same increase logic as the basic amigurumi ball pattern, just scaled up and without the decrease rounds. If a hat feels like too much to start with, go back to the amigurumi ball or the coaster set to build up more rounds-in-a-row practice first. Back to all free patterns.
